Engineering is a practical and academically challenging course for Year 9 and 10 students who are interested in how things are designed, built, tested and improved. Students apply scientific, mathematical and technological knowledge to solve real-world problems, while developing skills in technical drawing, materials testing, design thinking, workshop practice and engineering communication.
Through a range of hands-on projects and investigations, students explore areas such as structures, mechanisms, materials, forces and control systems. The course encourages students to think like engineers by analysing problems, testing ideas, evaluating solutions and considering the social, environmental and practical impacts of engineering decisions. Engineering provides a strong foundation for students interested in Engineering Studies, design, architecture, construction, robotics, manufacturing and other STEM-related pathways.
Engineering is being introduced in stages.
- Year 9 Engineering will commence in 2027.
- Year 10 Engineering will commence in 2028.

Year 9
Year 9 Engineering students will explore:
Engineering Foundations
Students will investigate how engineers solve real-world problems by applying mathematics, science and creative thinking. They will explore engineering materials, forces and technical drawing while developing practical workshop and design skills.
Structural Engineering Challenge
Students will design, build and test their own engineering structure, such as a bridge. Throughout the project they will apply the engineering design process, use CAD software to communicate ideas, and evaluate how different design decisions affect strength, efficiency and performance.
Mechanisms
Students will discover how engineers use gears, levers, pulleys and mechanical advantage to create movement. They will design, build and test working mechanisms while investigating concepts such as speed, torque, motion and efficiency.
Computer Aided Design & Manufacturing
Modern engineers use digital technologies to design and manufacture products. Students will develop skills in 2D and 3D CAD, laser cutting, 3D printing and basic workshop tools to transform their ideas into functional prototypes.
Engineering Design Process
Engineering is about continual improvement. Students will learn how engineers research problems, generate ideas, prototype solutions, test performance and refine designs using evidence and data. Throughout the course they will document and communicate their engineering thinking like professional engineers.
