Learn To Swim Program:

The swimming and water safety program aims to:

  • Encourage the development of a child’s confidence in the water by providing a wide variety of activities in a safe environment.
  • Increase your child’s awareness and understanding of the need for water safety by teaching appropriate skills and activities.
  • Encourage and develop survival skills.
  • Encourage and develop swimming strokes and water skills which form the basis of recreational and competitive swimming, as well as other aquatic sports & activities.
  • Focus on correct stroke technique in all four disciplines, incorporating increased distance.
  • Build social skills and coordination in a safe learning environment.

Preschool Classes (30 months to 5 years)

Barker College Aquatic Centre caters for preschool children from 2.5 to 5 years of age - Child/ren should be willing to separate from parents for the duration of the lesson.  These classes are predominantly held Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday mornings from 8:30am to 12:00pm, as well as 2:00pm to 3:00pm Monday to Friday afternoons.


Duration: 30 minute classes

School-aged Classes (5 years +)

Our school aged classes cater for all ability levels, from new swimmers to more advanced students, seeking to develop stroke technique, increase distances and improve competitive skills.  These classes are usually held from 6:30am to 8:30am Tuesday and Thursday mornings, as well as 3:00pm to 6:30pm, Monday to Friday, or from 7:00am to 12:00pm on Saturdays. 

Duration: 30, 45 and 60 minute classes

Private Lessons  (2.5 years – Adults)

Private lessons can be booked for anyone who will benefit from one-on-one instruction, as lessons are tailored to an individual's specific needs. These lessons will be available at the discretion of the Learn to Swim Program Coordinator.

Teen Learn to Swim

Barker Aquatics conducts friendly and relaxed classes for beginner, intermediate and advanced Teen swimmers. 

Beginner: This level is designed for swimmers who may have a fear of the water and are not confident to submerge.  The aim is to develop water confidence and teach basic swimming skills.

Intermediate: The aim of the level is for students to further develop their swimming strokes and start to establish knowledge on breathing techniques and arm strokes for both freestyle and backstroke.

Advanced: The advanced classes are for students who are looking to further develop their swimming strokes and start to establish knowledge surrounding breaststroke and butterfly techniques.

Duration: 30 or 45 minute classes

Adult Learn to Swim 

The Swim School conducts friendly and relaxed classes for beginner and intermediate Adult swimmers. Learn to swim classes feature the development of water confidence, safety skills and basic strokes. Intermediate classes include stroke correction, breathing techniques and improved fitness.

Beginner: This level is designed for swimmers who may have a fear of the water and are not confident to submerge.
The aim is to develop water confidence and teach basic swimming skills.

Intermediate: The aim of the level is for students to further develop their swimming strokes and start to establish knowledge on breathing techniques and arm strokes.
